D.O.T. Placard Specs
PLACARDS: Placards Ship Same Day to your corporate headquarters or drop shipped to your individual locations.
Placards measure 10¾ x 10¾ inches or 273mm x 273mm. The Federal Motor Carriers Safety Regulations (FMCSR),
also known as the U.S. Code of Federal Regulations Title 49 (49CFR) required the use of Hazardous Materials
Placards when shipping hazardous materials cargo and dangerous goods in the United States whether it be an
international shipment or domestic shipment. Canada and Mexico also have similar regulations that require
the use of these hazardous materials placards.
Placarding Sections in order of appearance:
Class One Explosive Placards:
Explosive Placards ship same day. GC Labels stocks the full line of Explosive
placards including explosive class 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 1.4, 1.5, 1.6 and a special explosive 1.4 placard with a tabbie.
The 1.4 explosive placard shown below comes pre labeled with a tabbie that contains compatibility group letters:
B,C,D,E,F,G & S perfect for arriving explosive imports. Each explosive placard measures 10¾ x 10¾ inches or
273mm x 273mm. Hazmat Transport and Packaging requirements can be found in the North American Emergency Response
Guidebook (ERG).
Standard Class DOT Placard Legend:
Standard Class Placards from Class 2 through Class 9 including Mixed Load - Dangerous Placards, HOT Placards and
Marine Pollutant Placards meet DOT specifications set forth in the 49 CFR, Code of Federal Regulations. The
Hazardous Materials Transport Guidelines and the usage requirements for these placard legends can be found in the
North American Emergency Response Guidebook (ERG), which is produced by the US Department of Transportation, Transport
Canada and the Secretariat of Transport and Communications.
DOT Blank Window Placards:
Blank Window Placards or Bulk Placard Legends are to be used in conjunction with
UN / NA numbers (a Four Digit Number) that refer to specific chemicals or groups of chemicals. These 4-Digit
UN & NA numbers and their regulatory requirements can be found in the North American Emergency Response Guidebook
(ERG). Blank Window Placards or Bulk Placard Legends measure 10¾ x 10¾ inches or 273mm x 273mm and are as always,
shipped the same day to your headquarters or drop shipped to your individual locations. *Include*: 3½ inch placard
numbers help you create ANY 4-Digit UN or NA Numbed Placard Legend. Self-Spacing, Black Numbers printed on Clear
Vinyl or White Vinyl come in packs or 50 or Placard Numbering Kits that include one pack of 50 of numbers Zero
through Nine. Creating the 4-Digit Placard System your-self is a convenient way to comply with the Department of
Transportation (DOT) when shipping a variety of hazardous materials.

Number (shown below). Each Placard measures 10¾ x 10¾ inches or 273mm x 273mm and is available for same day shipment.
4-Digit UN & NA Identification numbers and their hazmat shipping requirements can be found in the North American Emergency
Response Guidebook (ERG). If your specific UN or NA numbered placard is not shown below, GC Labels can print any Bulk
4-Digit UN or NA number, please see our Custom Numbered Placard Section.
Custom Bulk UN & NA Identification Number Placards:
4-Digit UN and NA identification numbers and their hazmat shipping requirements can be found in the North American
Emergency Response Guidebook (ERG). You, the customer are required by GC to determine the proper 4-Digit UN or NA
identification number. Call, e-mail, photocopy and fax or mail us a sample of the 4-Digit Pre-Numbered Placard Legend
you need. 3 to 5 day turnaround time is required. Please specify which Blank Window Placard Legend to use, the
4-Digit UN or NA ID number, Class Number and Material when calling, faxing, mailing or e-mailing.
International Placard Legend:
International Placards or Wordless Placards are designed to meet the requirements set forth by the UN (United Nations)
for the Transport of Dangerous Goods and 49 CFR, Code of Federal Regulations. Each Placard measures 10¾ x 10¾ inches
or 273mm x 273mm and is available for same day shipment.
